Language Circle offers travel scholarships for New Zealand teachers to attend the Intensive Seminar hosted by The Japan Foundation, Sydney.

Language Circle, in partnership with The Japan Foundation Sydney, provides travel support for New Zealand teachers attending the Intensive Seminar in Sydney.

1. Intensive Seminar application (The Japan Foundation Sydney)
Applicants must apply for the Intensive Seminar directly through The Japan Foundation Sydney (JFS) website and are responsible for completing their application.

Registrations are open until 16 November 2026.
2. Travel Scholarship application (Language Circle)
Registrations for the travel scholarship are open from 7 September 2026 to 17 November 2026.
Applicants who are accepted to the Intensive Seminar by JFS and are also selected by Language Circle will receive a travel scholarship of NZD 800, which will be paid after attendance at the seminar and return to New Zealand have been confirmed.
Please note that places for the travel scholarship are limited.
Recipients of the travel scholarship are expected to share their learning from the seminar and how they apply it in their teaching with the wider Japanese teaching community in New Zealand, for example through our newsletter articles with photos, by sharing teaching ideas and resources with the community through channels such as the NZAJLT mailing list, or by presenting at the NZALT Conference or LangSem.

The January 2027 seminar is mainly intended for teachers of Japanese in the primary and intermediate sectors.
For the Travel Scholarship (Language Circle)
- Applicants must be New Zealand registered teachers who are currently teaching Japanese at a New Zealand school and intend to continue teaching Japanese in New Zealand in 2027 and beyond.
- Pre-service teachers and holders of a Limited Authority to Teach (LAT) are not eligible.
To attend the JFS Intensive Seminar, there is no participation fee; however, participants are responsible for covering all travel costs, including transport, accommodation and insurance.
